Consistent Care. Fewer Daily Medications. More Stability.
Long-acting injectables (LAIs) are a form of psychiatric medication designed to provide steady, consistent treatment over time. Instead of taking a pill every day, LAIs are administered as an injection at scheduled intervals, typically every few weeks or once a month, depending on the medication and individual treatment plan.
LAIs contain the same active medication used in oral treatments, but they are released slowly and predictably into the bloodstream. This allows for smoother symptom control and reduces the ups and downs that can sometimes occur with daily medications.
What Are Long-Acting Injectables?
Long-acting injectables are extended-release psychiatric medications used to treat a variety of mental health conditions, including mood disorders, psychotic disorders, and other conditions where consistent medication levels are essential.
Once administered, the medication is gradually absorbed over time, providing continuous therapeutic coverage without the need for daily dosing.
Why We Use LAIs in Psychiatry
Medication adherence can be challenging for many reasons, busy schedules, side effects, forgetfulness, stress, or difficulty tolerating daily medications. LAIs help remove these barriers by simplifying treatment.
We may recommend an LAI when daily oral medications are difficult to take consistently, symptoms worsen between doses, a patient prefers fewer medication reminders, stability and relapse prevention are a priority, or medication effectiveness improves with steady blood levels.
LAIs are not about control or convenience for the provider. They are about supporting long-term stability, independence, and quality of life for the patient.
Benefits of Long-Acting Injectables
Many patients experience meaningful benefits with LAIs, including improved symptom stability due to consistent medication levels, reduced risk of missed doses, fewer daily medication decisions, lower relapse rates for certain conditions, greater peace of mind knowing medication is working continuously, and improved overall functioning in daily life, work, and relationships.
For some patients, LAIs can feel freeing, allowing them to focus on life rather than managing medications every day.
A Patient-Centered, Gentle Approach
All long-acting injectable medications at our practice are administered in-office by a trained psychiatric provider in a calm, supportive environment.
We take a therapeutic and gentle approach, which means you are never rushed, the process is explained clearly beforehand, your comfort and consent are prioritized, injection techniques are chosen to minimize discomfort, and questions and concerns are always welcome.
Many patients are surprised by how quick and well tolerated the process is. Our goal is for each visit to feel safe, respectful, and empowering.
What to Expect During an LAI Visit
During your appointment, your provider will review how you have been feeling since your last visit, assess symptom control and side effects, administer the medication in a professional and gentle manner, monitor your response, answer questions, and ensure you feel comfortable before you leave.
These visits are also an opportunity to check in, not just about medication, but about how you are doing as a whole person.
Is an LAI Right for You?
LAIs are not for everyone, and they are never forced or rushed. Choosing this option is a collaborative decision made between you and your provider based on your needs, preferences, and treatment goals.
If you are curious about long-acting injectables or wondering whether they could be a good fit for you, we encourage you to ask. Education and informed choice are central to how we practice psychiatry.
Our Commitment to Thoughtful, Individualized Care
At our practice, long-acting injectables are one of many tools we use to support mental health, not a one-size-fits-all solution. We believe in combining evidence-based medicine with compassionate, individualized care, always respecting the person behind the diagnosis.
If you would like to learn more or discuss whether an LAI might support your treatment plan, please speak with your provider at your next visit.
